If alimony is appropriate, how much will it be and how long will it be paid?

This depends on many factors and, except for certain terminating events, no guidelines exist in North Carolina that mandate how much or how long the alimony award will be. Therefore, the judge has significant discretion in evaluating an alimony claim. In fact, the alimony statute actually states that: “[t]he court shall exercise its discretion in determining the amount, duration, and manner of payment of alimony.”
